The Best Ice Cream in Broward and Palm Beach: A Local's Dessert Guide
Last month, Jaxson's Ice Cream Parlor in Dania Beach turned seventy. Seventy years of scoops on the same stretch of Federal Highway, through every boom, bust and hurricane season South Florida could throw at it. The Miami Herald marked the anniversary in September, and it got me thinking about something families ask me all the time when they are weighing one neighborhood against another: where is the good ice cream?
It sounds like a small question. It is not. A great local dessert shop is a weeknight ritual, a report-card reward, the place out-of-town grandparents get taken to. And in South Florida, where ice cream weather runs twelve months a year, the options are genuinely good. Here is the guide I give people, Broward and Palm Beach, with the details worth knowing before you go.
Broward County
Jaxson's Ice Cream Parlor, Dania Beach. The legend, and it earns it. Open since 1956, Jaxson's makes its ice cream, toppings and even soda syrups on site, serves portions that border on architectural, and doubles as a full old-fashioned restaurant. Fresh off its 70th anniversary, it is the one spot on this list that belongs on a national bucket list, and it is twenty minutes from most of Broward.
Let's Chill Homemade Ice Cream, Coral Springs. The artisanal pick. This veteran-owned shop on Sample Road makes every flavor in-house in small batches, no artificial colors or flavors, with seasonal rotations like guava and lime basil alongside the year-round lineup. If you want to taste what small-batch actually means, start here. letschillicecream.com
Cherry Smash, Coral Springs. Part soda fountain, part time machine. The room is packed with vintage memorabilia, the menu is root beer floats, banana splits and hand-dipped scoops, and it is the place locals take visitors to show off. Posted hours run afternoons and evenings seven days a week, latest on weekends. cherrysmash.com
Razzleberry's Homemade Ice Cream, Pompano Beach. Steps from the beach, made in-house daily with 14 percent butterfat, plus vegan coconut-based flavors and a few adults-only infused ones. The ideal bookend to a Pompano beach day. razzleberrysicecream.com
Kilwins, Las Olas, Fort Lauderdale. The Las Olas walking-street classic: Heritage chocolate, hand-paddled fudge, caramel corn and super-premium ice cream. If you are strolling Las Olas and smell fudge, that is your sign. kilwins.com
Mojo Donuts, Pembroke Pines. Not ice cream, but no Broward dessert list is complete without it. The donuts are made fresh daily from 6 a.m. and the case sells out, so go early. One note if you have not been in a while: the company says some licensed locations have closed and the original Pembroke Pines shop on Pines Boulevard is the flagship, with expansion planned. mojodonuts.com
Palm Beach County
Sloan's Ice Cream, West Palm Beach. The pink palace of Palm Beach County ice cream. Two downtown West Palm spots, one at The Square on Rosemary and one on Clematis, both open late, seven days a week. Over-the-top sundaes, a toy-and-candy shop atmosphere, and a guaranteed hit with visiting kids. sloansicecream.com
Palm Beach Ice Cream, Tequesta. The old-school counterpoint to Sloan's spectacle: a Tequesta shop that has been making ice cream the old-fashioned way for more than thirty years. If you live in the Jupiter area, this is the neighborhood answer. palmbeachicecream.com
Kilwins, Delray Beach. The Atlantic Avenue outpost of the same chocolate-and-fudge formula, right in the middle of Delray's downtown stroll. Same rule applies: follow the fudge smell. kilwins.com
The fine print
A few practical notes from experience. Hours at independent shops shift with the season and the weather, so check the shop's own site or social page before a promised trip, especially on weeknights. Popular spots sell out of the good stuff: Mojo's case is often picked clean by mid-morning, and seasonal small-batch flavors rotate out without warning. And lines at the famous ones are real on weekend evenings, which is honestly part of the fun if you plan for it.
Why I pay attention to this
When a family is choosing between two neighborhoods, the decision rarely comes down to square footage. It comes down to what Saturday looks like. A town with a beloved ice cream shop, a real downtown stroll and a place the kids beg to go back to is offering something a bigger house across the county line cannot. That texture is exactly what we help buyers read.
We take the surprises out of buying and selling, and that includes knowing where the good scoops are. If you are weighing neighborhoods, ask us what life actually feels like in each one. We live here too.

And for the rest of the family agenda, we have covered the area's most fun themed restaurants and where kids eat free separately.
